Ikea Mulig Integrated Drawers

Another project and another attempt at keeping my tiny place in order. I love the Ikea Mulig shelving unit because it’s so cheap but also light weight and robust. Made of powder coated steel with threaded shelves, it can be disassembled without destroying the structural integrity unlike typical particle board units whose brittle camlock mechanisms crumble and screw fixings become dislodge irreparably.

Fawning aside, the Mulig unit in my bathroom has become rather dishevled over the years…

Utter chaos.

Attempting to use a shelving unit to store all kinds of small knick-nacks really hasn’t worked out well. Yes, some containers would certainly help, but since these items are accessed frequently they’d eventually stop finding their way home.

My solution

My solution is to cut a drawer unit using 6mm thick ply designed to fully utilise the available space. All of the parts are assembled with PVA glue and four tabs, two on each side, are inserted once the unit has been positioned on the shelves to wedge it in place.
