Tripod Extension Arm

Tripod Extension Arm

This Tripod Extension Arm is an extension of my Tripod Phone Gripper design that has been adapted to fit an Extension Arm so you can take nice flat-lay photos… of your 3D prints. Funnily enough, I actually started this project before the Tripod Phone Gripper, but it deviated into perfecting the aforementioned product before circling back.

Reflecting on the whole process, I love how organically ideas can evolve when you embrace an iterative approach. The extension arm utilises a square 19x19mm aluminium tube that can be bought from the local hardware store and helps maintain orientation. I opted for a 900mm long arm in this case. The design also uses 2 x sets of bolts that I got from a left over spool of Esun filament. Praise be to the Esun gods for a never ending supply of bolts!

The gripper is adapted with a square aperture and through bolt with hexagonal indent to secure the nut. The split in the centre allows the two halves to compress for a tight fit.

The tripod mount has the hot shoe modeled to the base with a threaded handle to secure the extension arm once it has been adjusted.

The back end features a hook for attaching a counter weight and uses the same attachment design as the gripper. I also included a counter weight vessel that can be filled with water so as to easily adjust the weight, in the event you don’t want to buy some better suited lab weights.

Don’t forget to share any hot-shoe variations that you create for others to enjoy!
